Top Tips to Get Used to Wearing Hearing Aids

Getting used to wearing hearing aids is a process and one which requires patience. The freedom and joy hearing aids can bring you are exceptional. To begin with it is important to understand your ears will not be adjusted to wearing them immediately. Therefore, we have compiled some top tips to help you get used to wearing your new hearing aids. These tips will aid you in becoming more comfortable with your hearing aids and notice the benefits of wearing them.

Begin at Home

Adjusting to using your new hearing aids will be a process. To begin with your hearing aids may make you feel like you are experiencing an overload of sounds. By wearing them at home in the beginning, your brain can learn to adjust to background noises and filter these against prioritised sounds, such as conversation. It is important to treat this as a process and slowly adjust to the use of hearing aids in the comfort of your own home, before using them outside and within very loud environments. Once you are at ease using them at home, you can then start wearing them to the shop or for a walk to hear outdoor sounds. Initially you will notice sounds including your own voice and the rustling of a newspaper, however as you gradually adjust to wearing your hearing aids these sounds will start to sound more natural.

Take Breaks

As you first start wearing your hearing aids, we recommend taking breaks throughout the day to give yourself time to get used to them. Trying to wear a new pair of hearing aids all day will be overwhelming at the start. The more comfortable you become with them, the more you should wear them throughout the day. Try to increase your use by a few hours each week, gradually you will notice yourself finding them less noticeable and more beneficial.

Be Patient

As easy as it would be to give up and lose hope in getting used to your hearing aids, it is best to remain patient and continue with your journey to hearing restoration. You will notice small differences straight away, and the more frequently your wear them in different environments, the more you will recognise the great benefits of your hearing aids. Being patient will allow you to gradually get used to your hearing aids and avoid frustration.
