What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be explained as a perception of sound within the ear. It is not a sound other people can hear externally. Instead, this is internal and will sound similar to a ringing in one or both of your ears.

You may have experienced tinnitus on the occasion your ears have been over stimulated, like when leaving a concert, club, or festival. This is common and usually goes away after a little while. Tinnitus will become a problem when it becomes too loud or too regular. In this case, around 15% to 20% of people experience tinnitus and is most commonly found to affect older adults.

Symptoms of Tinnitus to look out for:

Many people will describe tinnitus as being a ringing inside the ear, however other descriptions include:
– Buzzing
– Roaring
– Clicking
– Hissing
– Humming

Your Audiologist will be able to determine the cause of your tinnitus with a full diagnostic assessment and a tinnitus handicap questionnaire. In some cases, this will also include a middle ear test.

To positively manage tinnitus if not treat, the cause or the aggravation must be identified correctly. Our audiologists will be able to help reduce the cause or aggravation depending on what it may be. You may benefit from sound enrichment, hearing aid amplification, noise maskers, or hearing protection. We will be able to provide you options for managing tinnitus to help reduce the impact it has on your hearing and your overall wellbeing.

Hearing therapy can also be arranged, and this may include TRT, CBT, and Counselling. Although this sounds daunting, it is not, and has had positive outcomes for many people suffering with tinnitus.
