Improve Your Eye Health: Foods for Sight

Everybody is concerned about losing their eyesight or their eyesight deteriorating, with the majority of adults believing that this is an inevitable part of growing old. But some may be wondering, are there any ways I can improve my eyesight before needing to rely on lenses? You may be pleased to know there has been plenty of research into this topic. Finding there are several things you CAN do to improve your eye health at home. Which may have a positive impact upon your eyesight in the long-term. As well as contributing to your general health too. Below we have taken a closer look at some of the foods which can contribute to better eyesight.

 

Vitamins and Antioxidants for the eyes

One of the best ways to improve your eyesight naturally and to keep them healthier for longer, is to ensure they are receiving all the vitamins and minerals they need. These can be easily sourced within natural ingredients within food. A regular supply of nutritious foods within your diet is good for your eye health and overall health in general.

Two common vitamins and antioxidants which have shown to help improve eyesight include, Vitamin A and Lutein.

If you are deficient in Vitamin A, this can damage the body’s supply of a necessary pigment call Rhodopsin which is vital for our ability to see in low light and at night. To ensure you are receiving enough Vitamin A, these foods are known for containing high amounts of this necessary vitamin:

  • cheese
  • eggs
  • oily fish
  • fortified low-fat spreads
  • milk and yoghurt

 

What is Lutein?

Lutein, in recent years, has been shown to play a role in our eyes. This is a pigment which is found naturally in high concentrations within a small part of the retina called the Macula. This part of the eye is responsible for three-colour vision. Lots has scientific research now points towards lutein supplementation as being capable of improving our natural vision. Fortunately, you will be pleased to know, this antioxidant can be found in spinach and kale, as well as other fruits and vegetables.

 

Foods good for your eyes

Other foods rich in the necessary vitamins and antioxidants good for our eyes include:

  • Grapes – there have been positive results from research into the link between the antioxidants within grapes and reducing the risk of developing a common eye condition known as Cataracts.
  • Leafy Greens – eating your greens is recommended by all healthcare providers, since they offer so many benefits. As well as being good for your overall health, they offer many benefits for the eyes too!
  • Fish – rich in omega-3, fish has been proven to help protect your eyes from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. Fish should be a part of your weekly diet.
  • Sweet Potatoes – Containing a source of vitamin A called beta carotene, incorporating sweet potatoes into your diet can reduce the risk of eye infections.
  • Carrots – rumour has it, carrots help you see in the dark. Well, that’s what we were told as children anyway. This isn’t just something your parents told you to get you to eat your veg. In fact, the vitamins within carrots do actually contribute to our ability to see in low lights!
  • Citrus Fruits – Vitamin C from citrus fruits is great for your overall eye health.
