How Often Should I Get My Hearing Tested?

Taking care of your hearing is a very important step in protecting yourself from any potential hearing impairments. Experiencing hearing difficulties can become very isolating and unsettling. It is usually most common amongst people over the age of 65. By prioritising hearing care and getting your hearing tested regularly, an Audiologist can detect any issues or address any concerns you may have about your hearing. A professional Audiologist will be able to decide upon a possible cause and treatment.

Signs You Should Get Your Hearing Tested

There are several signs to look out for that indicate a need to get your hearing tested. You or your loved ones may have noticed a gradual change in your hearing. This could include; struggling to hear the TV, difficulty in engaging in conversation, missing high pitched sounds such as alarms, phone calls, and doorbells.

Tinnitus – Tinnitus is the word to describe when you can hear noises from inside your ears. This is usually a ringing, buzzing, humming, or whooshing. This is another sign to look out for if you are having difficulty hearing.

Noticing these signs and booking yourself a hearing test means an Audiologist will be able to pick up on any concerns and discuss with you the options available.

When and Why Should You Get Your Hearing Tested?

If you are aged 50+, we recommend having your hearing tested every 3 years. This is to ensure your ears and hearing are still healthy and to pick up any hearing concerns or difficulties. We recommend you book an appointment with an Audiologist to give your hearing and ear health a thorough test. Noticing mishearing or a hearing impairment early will allow us to find you a quicker solution. It is also important to note that hearing loss can affect a person of any age for various reasons. Therefore, it is beneficial to get your hearing checked throughout your lifetime. This is especially important if you notice any sudden issues, such as pain or are more susceptible to noise induced hearing loss.

Once an initial test is complete your Audiologist can make a personal and medically advised decision on how frequently you should return for hearing tests. We recommend as early as 6 months, dependent of hearing and wax management to every 3 years when results are fine.

If results from your hearing test fall out of normal limits, you will be invited back for a full 90-minute hearing consultation. One of our Audiologists will investigate your hearing in greater detail. Hearing aid wearers or those who feel they need a full consultation immediately can be booked in for a full consultation by a member of our team.
