Ear wax is simply produced by glands in the ear canals to protect our ears from germs. It is made up of dust, debris & foreign objects, old skin cells and oil. It is normal to have small amounts of ear wax, and occasionally this will fall out on its own. Sometimes people can experience a build-up of ear wax and this is when one would benefit from professional ear wax removal.
When Should You Seek Help?
A small amount of wax should not be a concern, but If you have a build-up of ear wax you should seek professional advice and treatment. If you are experiencing any of the following: feeling of fullness, itching, ringing, and partial/complete hearing loss, we recommend getting in touch with our Audiology team to book a consultation with them, who will then talk you through the treatments available and what to do next.
Why Visit a Professional?
To avoid causing yourself any damage with at home remedies, we recommend you seek the advice and treatment from a trained professional. A common misconception is that cotton buds are safe to use to remove small pieces of ear wax. Choosing to use cotton buds can result in a negative outcome by pushing any ear wax further into the canal and can even cause damage to the ear canal and drum.
By visiting an Audiologist for a consultation for your ear wax removal, the process is harmless, and you are not at risk of damage. At Camden Opticians we will discuss the options with you for removal, during a consultation to ensure you get the best results.
Microsuction – A Safer, Faster and Cleaner Method
Microsuction is the process of which the ear wax build-up is removed by using a microscope and a medical suction device to suck out the wax. Unlike other alternative methods, the wax can be both soft and hard for removal using Microsuction. Therefore, the procedure is very quick and easy. Usually during a Microsuction appointment the wax can be removed within 30 minutes. Should it be necessary, we will carry out a Video Otoscopy during your appointment – A live video showing the inside of your ear before and after the Microsuction treatment. This will demonstrate the results and allow us to check on the general health of the ear.
Unlike other methods of ear wax removal such as syringing and irrigation, Microsuction will usually only require one visit – resulting in faster results. Should additional visits be required, we do not charge for any follow up visits.
